Fourth Street Construction This Summer
Map of the University and Fourth Street project area

Beginning on Monday, May 13, 2024 , crews will start a two-year project—done in two phases—to reconstruct and improve University Avenue and Fourth Street SE between Oak Street and I-35W on and near campus. Here’s what to expect in the months ahead:

Timeline

Monday, May 13 through August

Fourth Street will be reduced to two lanes between Oak Street and the ramp to I-35W. Crews will work along the south side (left lanes) of Fourth Street. Traffic can continue to use the right lanes.

August through October

Fourth Street will be reduced to one lane between Oak Street and 10th Avenue. Crews will work along the north side (right lanes) of Fourth Street. Traffic can continue to use the left lane.

Two-week closure in late summer

Fourth Street between 17th Avenue and Oak Street Street will be fully closed to traffic while crews construct the new METRO E-line bus platform. We’ll provide more information, including the closure dates, when it’s available.

Getting around

If you walk or bike

The Fourth Street bike lanes and pedestrian access will remain open. People walking or biking may be routed around the construction area for safety.

If you use transit

Bus service will be maintained. Some transit stops will be temporarily closed or relocated as work moves through the construction area. For information on affected stops, visit Metro Transit’s Rider Alerts and download the Gopher Trip app for updates.

If you drive

Generally, Fourth Street will remain open to traffic, but be alert for lane closures and plan for delays. No on-street parking will be available on Fourth Street. Visit the PTS Facilities page to find parking in the area.

Stay informed

This post and Hennepin County’s project website will have the latest details, and we will inform the campus community as work progresses.
